this is the guy who showed up at the two florida primary debates when on the ropes, when newt gingrich had him on the ropes after south carolina. he was focused. he was assertive. he was prepared. he was knowledgeable. he was on his a game and looked even better because the guy on the other side, president obama, wasn't there. he mailed it in. i think he thought you could do this by absentee ballot. and i think you can also say that you can see some of the burdens of incumbency that weighed heavily on president obama's shoulders last night. number one, no primary. he was rusty. number two, a record to defend. it's not that good a record. these things really weighed on barack obama. i would almost say to him call up hillary and have another grueling primary before the next debate. >> let me hear what anna tweeted, i feel for democtic spinners this morning. it's painful as blank to go in a spin room and know that your guy lost. been there. here's what a lot of people -- >> we're not pretending he won. >> you're not. >> i think it's clear on the mtsicmts atmospheres, on the debate that ro

i think the only change from the primaries is that he took on the newt gingrich role of including the moderator in the beating he was trying to give. >> newt's advice. >> he took newt's advice. i don't think though that his alpha male sort of act necessarily worked on barack obama. i think barack obama is being criticized for not looking at romney when he was talking, for looking down, looking away, but i do think that barack obama's affect similarly was designed to appeal to a constituency. we were talking about this on the break. his affect probably was more appealing to a female voter. it's a subtle thing but i think it's important. >> another thing that was mentioned by mitt romney was education. but his true feelings weren't really that clear. they tended to come out during the campaign. watch this. >> and the key to great schools, great teachers. so i reject the idea that i don't believe in great teachers or more teachers. >> he says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. did he not get the message of wisconsin, the american people did. it's time for us to cut back

i find myself agreeing, but narrowly, with newt gingrich here. let's embrace the essence of the lincoln douglas senate debates of 1858, the democratic spirit of two candidates facing off with 90 minutes, no moderator, freely open to the populous to decide who wins the war of ideas. aren't the presidential dae baits when we test the mettle of each side's convictions and the substance of their policy. this has become an ideologically driven election. no longer referendum on foreign wars or economic failings, this is a choice of doctrine and of direction. so perhaps that's why i don't mind sharing a little political science secret with you. although the debates routinely draw large viewing audiences, evidence shows that voters do learn a little bit of information from them, but political scientists also tend to agree that debates don't actually make a difference in the outcome. sorry. it's at least statistically true. most often, you can accurately predict where a race will end up after the debates by knowing where things stood before the debates. b
